ABUJA RESIDENTS JITTER AS INDEPENDENCE DAY APPROACHES.

Residents of Abuja have expressed apprehension of a possible terrorist attack during this year’s celebration of Nigeria’s independence on October 1.
At last year’s anniversary celebration, car bombs rocked the city in attacks that Niger Delta militant group, MEND, claimed responsibility for. Few days from now, the country will mark another Independence Day, yet the memory of last year’s attack and the subsequent ones that have been carried out by radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram, have given Abuja residents some source of concern as to whether there would be another strike.Read more

ALABAMA TOWN GIVES OFFENDERS A CHOICE: JESUS OR JAIL

Given the choice between jail and church, which would you choose?
The small southern Alabama town of Bay Minette is giving non-violent offenders a chance to pick between lockup and the Lord.
Beginning next week, Operation ROC (Restore Our Community) will have a city judge offer those found guilty of misdemeanors the choice between working off their offenses in jail and paying a fine or attending the church of their choice every week for a year. WKRG-TV in Mobile, Ala., reported 56 churches in North Baldwin County are participating in the program.
If offenders pick church, it doesn't necessarily guarantee eternal salvation, but they can check in each week with the pastor or the police department. If the program is completed successfully their case will be dropped.
Bay Minette Police Chief Mike Rowland says it costs his department about $75 a day to jail offenders, so the ROC program is cost-effective. "Longevity is the key," he explained in a television interview. "A 30-day drug program doesn't work. A 30-day alcohol program does not work. But long-term programs to do work, and we believe that's what'll happen here."
Rowland says that there is no separation of church and state boundary crossed here, but to be sure, NewsFeed called Notre Dame law professor Rick Garnett, an expert on constitutional law. He said it could look to a court that government is pushing the convicted into a religious option if there is not a secular choice as well.
"A lot of times in church-state cases, the lines aren't so crisp and clean," he told TIME. "This looks more like the kind of case where courts have been very cautious about pressuring people."

BOMB THREATS CAUSES TRAFFIC CONGESTION AT MURTALA MUH'D INT'L AIRPORT

The Director-General, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Dr. Harold Demuren, on Friday appealed to air passengers to bear with the present traffic congestion in the Murtala Mohammed Airport Ikeja and environs.

A statement by the agency quoted Demuren as saying that the traffic congestion was connected with the “prevailing preventive measures to curtail the ongoing security threat in the country particularly as it affects the MMA.”

The statement read, “This is part of our spirited effort to ensure that the screening of all vehicular movement in and out of the airport is conscientiously carried out. The screening is in support of the enhanced body pat down being carried out on passengers without compromise.”

The NCAA boss added, “I enjoin the travelling public to please bear with us while we are doing everything possible to guarantee safe, secured and smooth flight operations in and out of all our airports.”

The Airport Command of the Nigerian Police Force and the Aviation Security Department of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria had on Thursday evening beefed up security around the flagship airport, the MMIA.

The move followed a rumour that members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram, were planning to bomb the airport.

Specifically, it was gathered that a combined team of Air Force, police, State Security Services and the aviation security of FAAN had embarked on a thorough screening of vehicles and people coming into the MMIA.

Several vehicles parked around the airport were towed away.

The tougher security measures however led to heavy traffic jam in and around the airport as hundreds of vehicles were trapped.

It was gathered that passengers coming to the airport for evening overseas flights suffered much delay due to the congestion.

The FG had a few weeks ago begun the installation of CCTV cameras around the MMIA to secure it from a possible bomb attack.

FAAN had put certain security measures aimed at securing the airport in place.

SUSPECTED SUICIDE BOMBER ARRESTED IN RIVERS STATE

Security operatives of the 2 Amphibious Brigade in Port Harcourt on Friday arrested a middle-aged man with items suspected to be explosives.

The suspect was arrested at the gate while trying to drive into Bori Camp between 12 noon and 1 pm. It was gathered that two soldiers, who were on a routine stop-and-search at the gate, recovered items alleged to be harmful in the suspect’s car before apprehending him.

The spokesman for the 2 Amphibious Brigade, Major Aminu Ilyasu, who confirmed the arrest, explained that the suspect was arrested as he attempted to drive into the army barracks.

Ilyasu stated that the man, who was riding a private car at the time he was arrested, was immediately taken to the barracks for interrogation.

He said, “Between 12 noon and 1 pm today, soldiers on guard arrested a middle-aged man at the gate of the 2 Amphibious Brigade in Port Harcourt as he tried to drive into the barracks.

“He was arrested with items suspected could be used to do something harmful. The man is currently in our custody and we are still investigating.”

When asked if the suspect was carrying a bomb or any explosive, the 2 Amphibious Brigade spokesman declined making further comment pending the end of their investigation.

Ilyasu refused to state the identity of the suspect, insisting that ongoing investigation could be jeopardised if the name of the suspect was mentioned.

“I cannot say the items are bombs. But we feel they could be used to do something harmful. Again, we cannot reveal all this now because it could jeopardise our investigation,” he said.

The army spokesman pointed out that the 2 Amphibious Brigade had beefed up security, including closing all the gates leading to the barracks, except the main gate where the suspect was apprehended.

LACK OF DEEP SLEEP MAY CAUSE HYPERTENTION

Experts have found out that people who cannot sleep deeply stand the risk of becoming hypertensive, writes JAYNE AUGOYE

Sleep is a vital part of human existence. An adequate slumber helps promote a healthy heart, reduces stress, fight depression while also energising the body. When an individual does not get enough sleep at night, the body is unable to heal because the human system produces more protein during sleep, which, in turn, allows the cells to repair any damages.

While various studies have linked chronic sleep disorders to low levels of sleep, to risks of heart disease, obesity and reduced life span, a new research shows that people who get the least deep sleep each night have a higher risk of hypertension.

The study, published in the journal of Hypertension, is one of the first to find that it is the quality of your sleep at night - and not how many hours it lasts - that can affect your risk for high blood pressure.

The aim of the study, carried out by researchers at Harvard Medical School, was to look specifically at the slow-wave stages of sleep, which are said to be made up of about 90 minutes to two hours of a normal night sleep. This time frame also represents the deepest hours of sleep.

While trying to discover the effect of deep sleep on health, the scientists examined 784 healthy men who were part of an ongoing sleep study and did not have signs of high blood pressure at the start of the research. During the three-and- a-half year study, the blood pressure of the men was checked at various times while their levels of slow-wave sleep were monitored at home by a machine.

After examining them for a number of variables, the researchers found that the men who spent the least time in slow-wave or deep sleep were the most likely to develop high blood pressure. Although a night of normal sleep should consist of about 25 per cent slow-wave sleep, the researchers say that the men in the study who had the highest risk for hypertension managed to enjoy deep sleep for no more than 4 per cent of their total sleep each night. The researchers found that the men with the least deep sleep were more likely to have sleep apnea and tended to sleep less over all.

Explaining the outcome of the research further, an author of the study and a professor of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School, Dr Susan Redline, says that although the study examined only men, she believes the results will also apply to women who fail to get enough deep sleep.

She says, “During slow-wave sleep, the brain’s electrical activity slows down, as do a person’s heart rate, adrenaline levels and blood pressure. The average person’s blood pressure falls about 10 millimeters of mercury during slumber, a dip that largely occurs when deep sleep sets in. This nightly fall in blood pressure is a good thing. It is also known that the areas of the brain that regulate sleep patterns have a lot of crosstalk with areas of the brain that release hormones and other mediators that influence blood pressure. When those areas of the brain are not entering slow-wave sleep, it may interfere with various brain signals that influence blood pressure.”

The researchers also reveal that an adequate amount of slow-wave sleep can be influenced by a number of factors. According to them, any condition like loud snoring, sleep apnea or restless legs syndrome that disrupts your sleep at night can shorten your slow-wave sleep, as can medications. Even your age can have an effect especially since deep sleep declines as one gets older.

Suggesting ways to encourage a deep night sleep, the researchers say that various studies show that being more physically and cognitively active can increase the amount of time you spend in deep sleep at night.

“Some of that research comes from animals,” Dr. Redline notes. “If you give animals more tasks to do during the day they have more slow-wave sleep at night.”

The only way to know precisely the amount of time you drift into deep sleep each night, they say, is through an overnight sleep study. But the key to finding this out, according to Redline, is to assess whether you feel rested in the morning and alert and ready to go after seven to eight hours of sleep.

“If you’re feeling tired and not refreshed after a full night’s sleep, that is a good indication that you need to talk to your doctor, and then your doctor would decide whether you need to see a sleep specialist,” she says.

EX-NIGER DELTA MILITANTS IN SEARCH OF BOKO HARAM MEMBERS

A BATTLE line appears to be emerging between the dreaded sect, Boko Haram, and ex-militants of the Niger Delta, following the state of insecurity in the nation as the ex-militants has vowed to storm Borno State in search of members of the Islamic sect.
Leader of a group of 6,166 ex-militants, Abubakar Sylvester Oyas Tambo, popularly known as Aso Tambo, told The Guardian in an interview, that the group will soon storm Borno and other hideouts of Boko Haram in order to put an end to their threats on government and the nation at large.
Tambo, the national chairman of the Coalition of Niger Delta ex-Militants Leaders, under the Presidential Amnesty phase two, is from Ekeremo in Bayelsa State and was the leader of the group of more than 2,000 ex–militants that stormed the FCT on July 7th, 2010 in over 60 buses.
He viewed the current state of insecurity as posed by Boko Haram as a fight against Jonathan’s administration and vowed to quench it. “It is because of the innocent ones dying in these bomb blasts that we are taking this step and we will not allow the unchecked activities of Boko Haram to destabilize Jonathan’s administration.”
He, however, absolved the president and the Amnesty office from knowledge of the group’s plan to attack the sect.
Tambo, who called on Northern leaders, to call members of the Boko Haram sect to order, or have both groups clash, urged the federal government to steer clear of the clashes that will soon ensue. According to him, the attack on innocent citizens by Boko Haram was not a mere fight against the government and the entire nation, but against the government of a Niger Delta-led government.
He called on Boko Haram to stop the cowardly act of hiding among innocent Nigerians to fight but that they should come out to the open, set up bases from where they could be engaged, rather than stay in places where innocent Nigerians can easily fall victim of crossfire.

PASTOR ADEBOYE DISMISSES PASTOR FOR EXTORTING #50,000

Overtime, both believers and non- believers have always made the statement that the direct synonym for most new generation churches on Nigeria, is Business-Centre. Despite the talks, articles and debates on the true picture for the purpose at which churches are established in Nigeria in this 21st Century; some accept hook, line and sinker that some pastors are just living fat and extorting their members’ hard earned money.
These new generation pastors live luxurious life, pretending to be God- sent. They are fond of lampooning the congregation with supernatural miseries that create fear in their minds and end up succumbing to all pastors’ innuendos. The latest gist from the acclaimed house of God is that one Redeemed pastor after every camp service smiles to the bank with his swollen accounts.
We were told that the pastor demands as much as N50,000 from hawkers who want to trade during camp service before they can have access to make any sale without the consent of the General Overseer. We further learnt that after keeping calm for so long, the trader soon felt cheated, claiming that the pastor’s act has been the extortion of the first order. Moreover, they went ahead to table the matter with Pastor Adeboye, who instantly reacted to the injustice.
Information at our disposal revealed that on getting the report, Pastor Adeboye dismissed the dubious pastor, saying he has never asked anyone to collect money from the sellers who display their wares at the camp.
